Special nighttime visit to Meiji Shrine

Since I was a little girl, my favorite area in Tokyo has been Omotesando. It's about 15 minutes walk from Shibuya and 5 minutes from Harajuku, but the atmosphere is totally different and more mature. There are so many boutiques including the ones like Chanel, Dior, LOUIS VUITTON etc.

The other day my mom and I went there to attend the special nighttime visit to Meiji Shrine for the Centennial Anniversary of the Demise of Emperor Meiji.

It was a very hot day, it was about 33 degrees outside and so so so humid. We stopped at GROM, our favorite gelato shop. We chose Melon and Raspberry flavors and they both were amazing!

There was something going on in front of the gate.

Sake barrels?

You wash your hands and gargle before you go in to wash yourself clean.

The Shrine gate called "Torii".

The signboard for the ceremony.

We sat there and waited for the sky to get dark...

Usually you cannot enter after 6:30pm but only on the 28th and 29th of July you were allowed to go in. There were beautiful lighting everywhere.

Beautiful.

The “husband and wife camphor trees” in front of the main shrine building.

It's a part of the main building.

Bamboos with candle lights.

The gate.

It was very beautiful.

There were hundreds of candles on the way to the exit and it was nice although it was too dark to walk and people were bumping into each other.

We don't usually go out at night as we know we would be too tired to travel all the way to come home but it was like a once in a lifetime type of thing so we didn't hesitate to go! And it was very interesting.

If you come to Japan, you shouldn't miss Meiji Shrine. It's in the middle of the central, easy to visit so just take 1-2 hours of your time and visit there. It's like a huge park with a very beautiful landscape.
